Hair Density Explained

Hair Density Explained

What is Hair Density and Why is it Important?

Hair density, like color and texture, is a vital factor in understanding the uniqueness of your hair and its characteristics. It is the number of hair strands on your head, basically, the thickness or thinness of your hair.

How Do You Determine Hair Density?

While there is no definite measure of hair density, you can determine it by observing your hair in its natural form. This is a simple mirror test where you pull a handful of your hair to the side. If you can see your scalp, you have medium hair density. If you can see your scalp without moving your hair, you have low hair density. Another way, that works for those with relatively long hair, is by putting your hair in a ponytail and then measuring its girth or circumference. A general rule: if the circumference is less than 2 inches (5.08cm), you have low hair density; if it falls between 2 and 3 inches (7.62 cm), your hair has medium density, and anything above that indicates high hair density.

Comparatively, Afro or Black hair has lower density than Asian or Caucasian hair. This, however, is not to say that all Afro hair is of low density. Some have noticeably high density. What this means is that people of African descent with low hair density need to learn what it means and how it can be changed. Not having thick or full hair is a challenge in terms of styling troubles, not finding the right products for your hair, and not being able to achieve and enjoy full and voluminous hair.

These challenges, especially, affect people of Afro descent who desire to keep and maintain their natural hair. It can prove difficult to try and style low-density natural hair without the risk of shedding or risking baldness. The important question is, is there a solution to improving hair density? Well, fear not. I am here to help.

Can Hair Density Be Increased?

While hair density is determined by genetics, the following tips have proven helpful in altering the appearance of low-density hair and maximizing hair volume:

  • Choosing the Right Products for your hair
  • Eating a well-balanced diet
  • Scalp massages and hair growth products
